So you've temporarily lost your waist. That shouldn't mean you have to sacrifice all sense of style, or spend your free time hunting down an entirely new closet of plus size maternity clothes for work and play. Especially since we've got you covered with pretty and practical basics that you'll reach for every day.
Here's the brief take on plus size maternity clothes to show how dressing when expecting can be as easy as one, two, baby makes three.
Plus size maternity clothes got better as it went along. "The beginning is kind of hard, when you're barely showing and can't quite wear the maternity stuff yet. But when you get into months five and six-then it's fun."
Designers' top tips for staying stylish with plus size maternity clothes while getting bigger:
Pace yourself.
Pumpkin Wentzel, owner and designer of Pumpkin Maternity, says that buying plus size maternity clothes is an ongoing process. You probably won't need them until the third month of your pregnancy (although some women may need to buy larger sizes in regular clothes before then). And clothes you buy in your second trimester might not fit up to your due date, so be prepared to buy a couple of new things toward the end if necessary.
Hit the lingerie department.
You're not ready for nursing bras yet, but you still need to update what you have to fit your changing body and help your new plus size maternity clothes fit and look better. "While you're pregnant, you go up a cup size and your rib cage expands, so new bras are key," says Wentzel.
Avoid oversize plus size maternity clothes.
"Most plus size maternity clothes today are made with fabrics that stretch, like rayon-Lycra," says Heidi Weinstein, designer, "They're comfortable and give you room to grow but still hug the body."
Plan on a little post-pregnancy shopping.
Don't frustrate yourself by trying to fit into your old jeans right away. Instead, buy a couple of new and comfortable transition pieces once the baby is born to celebrate your new mommy status.
How to get out of the plus size rut? Every pregnant woman has experienced the pregnancy weight gain. Your stomach is growing, you cannot fit into your normal clothes, you can't see your feet, you waddle when you walk, your feet and legs are swollen, and other additional physical changes make you feel, well, fat! Sometime during your pregnancy, you may even start to feel bored with the pregnancy and/or feel depressed. Yes, those raging hormones kick in too.
Here are some tips in helping to beat those pregnancy weight gain traps:
1) Eat healthy and get plenty of rest. Choose healthy foods and ensure that your intake is nutritious.
2) Exercise. Even a short walk outdoors will lift your spirits.
3) Make yourself feel attractive by taking the time to groom yourself. Do your hair and put on makeup. We all feel so confident and alive when we look good.
4) Buy plus size maternity clothes that will make you feel good. Don't buy them just because they fit you.
5) Ensure to include pretty accessories in your daily wardrobe such as nice earrings or a pretty scarf. Most of us raid our spouse's closet for clothes that we can wear throughout our pregnancy. Lovely accessories can even dress up your spouse's wardrobe. |
